Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie’s disease is an actual condition wherein your penis has areas of scarring on the tissues under the surface called plaque that forces the penis to bend or curve, losing both length and circumference. It could be something tangible from within. Sometimes people also feel some aches in parts of the penis because of that particular scar formation. It can bend up, down or to the side when an erection is present, depending on where your scar is. Some persons suffering from Peyronie’s disease do not have a curve but might have an indentation that gives their penis an “hourglass” appearance.

Most men and people assigned male at birth do not have strictly straight erections. If your penis has a little curve-even or if you’ve had the curve your whole life, it does not mean that you have Peyronie’s disease.

Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease

The main Peyronie’s disease symptoms are a curve or bend in your penis. Scar tissue under the skin can be felt sometimes too.

Other symptoms of Peyronie’s disease include:

  • Your penis is losing some length.
  • Losing girth in your shaft makes it look like there is an indent or an hourglass shape.
  • Bulges in your penis.
  • Your erections cause pain.
  • Erections that feel softer.
  • You and/or your partner cannot penetrate as easily as you could.
  • Pain with sex, called dyspareunia.

Peyronie’s disease symptoms develop either slowly or over time. Pain is usually self-limiting. However, the bend in your penis causes problems. If you have a bend in your penis greater than 30 degrees, which resembles when the hands of an analogue clock read 1:00, you cannot have sex or else you will experience painful sex.

Causes of Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie’s disease causes are not always certain. Some studies hypothesize scarring follows trauma to your erect penis, which often manifests itself in the form of abnormal bending during sexual intercourse. However, as many as 80 per cent of those individuals suffering from Peyronie’s disease fail to recall the incident that triggered such changes in the appearance of the penis.

Perhaps such changes result from an undetected injury occurring as an innocent part of routine sexual relations. People with Peyronie’s disease may be more prone to the formation of excessive scar tissue when these minor injuries occur. Not everyone who suffers an injury to the penis develops Peyronie’s disease, so there may be some genetic or environmental component.

How is Peyronie’s disease diagnosed?

Your healthcare provider may be able to determine if you have Peyronie’s disease just by performing a physical exam. The hard plaques can usually be felt regardless of whether the penis is erect or not. Your healthcare provider may inject a drug into your penis to make it stiff and take pictures to study how the penis curves. In some cases, dynamic ultrasound is used, which uses sound waves to get a picture of what is in your body. This is done to see where the plaque is, check for calcium buildup, and show how the blood flows in your penis.

Treatment of Peyronie’s disease

In very few cases (about 13 out of 100) Peyronie’s disease goes away on its own. Most healthcare professionals encourage Peyronie’s disease treatment to be treated without surgery in the first 12 months after the disease is noticed. Men who have small plaques, minimal curving of the penis, no pain and no sexual problems will not require treatment. When you do need to be treated, there are many options.

3 step Treatment process at KHPL

Consultation and Diagnosis

Our expert team begins with an appropriate evaluation for Peyronie’s disease treatment. The physical assessment includes a complete dynamics ultrasound. Based on the assessment of plaque burden, curvature, and any possible interference with sexual function, we formulate a tailored treatment strategy.

Non-Surgical Treatment Approach

We would like to try conservative treatments in the first 12 months of the onset of the disease. The treatment would be tailored to medical interventions such as oral medications, intralesional injections, or other specialised treatments meant to prevent scarring and even slow the disease's progression.

Follow-up and Comprehensive Care

Patients are constantly supported and followed through after they have begun treatment. Our doctors monitor changes in penile curvature and assess the reduction of pain and the general sexual function of the patient. We continue counseling and will adapt strategies for the treatment.

FAQs

Is Peyronie's disease permanent?

Peyronie’s disease is not always permanent. In about 13% of cases, the condition may spontaneously resolve. However, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve outcomes and manage symptoms effectively.

The condition mainly involves penile structure and sexual functions. In most cases, it does not affect fertility but causes sexual intercourse problems. The associated stress indirectly results in psychological implications and affects the patient’s reproductive health.

Certain lifestyle modifications might be helpful adjuncts to therapy, such as maintaining a healthy weight, control of underlying comorbidities, avoidance of tobacco and excessive alcohol use, and stress-reducing activities.

The duration of treatment varies with cases. Non-surgical interventions typically take 12 months in the preliminary phase of treatment. Some patients are kept under management to control symptoms and prevent progression.
