Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
HIV spreads primarily through the exchange of certain body fluids from a person who has HIV. These fluids include blood, semen, vaginal and rectal fluids, and breast milk. The most common ways HIV is transmitted are through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles or syringes, receiving contaminated blood transfusions or organ transplants (rare today due to screening), and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Understanding how HIV spreads is crucial for preventing new infections and reducing stigma. With proper education, prevention, and treatment, people can protect themselves and others from the virus.
